A General Contractor under the microscope:

The General Contractor is a four fold individual. To qualify for this license you must have detailed knowledge and experience in at least three areas of the trades. At Visions Remodeling, our owner/contractor Mike Scoffone comes from a building maintenance history. For him framing metal and wood studs was common place. Beyond that, tile, drywall, plumbing, electric and painting was common exposure from years prior to acquiring his license. The Better Business Bureau of California issues their licenses to them and that's all you need to qualify to take the exam, however, there is much more to being successful.

First, you have to qualify with the afore mentioned skills. Second, you must be able to understand local building code and be able to interact with the local building inspection personal. Third, you must be able to estimate accurately, maintain a business like any other, keep all licenses and insurances current, pay sub contractors and suppliers when due, etc. Interwoven with the support of all subcontractors is getting your selections made on time and insuring all details are addressed beforehand. Owner-builders often get caught in the "no man's land" of a project not knowing who's responsibilities are what as sub contractor's come and go. Fourth and most important to you, have an eye for what we are working on. You need your general contractor to caution you when they see a design choice which may be departing from the theme, or when your idea may be conflicting with your time or financial requirement.
